PROJECT OVERVIEW

1. Description of Our Community

Our school is located in AliaÄŸa, in the West of Turkey. AliaÄŸa is a small town with many historical attractions and cultural heritage. It will be a chance for us to show our town’s natural and cultural beauties. There is a story where the name of the town comes from. A story about the name of the district is as follows: The owner of the farm, Ali AÄŸa, commits a crime in Istanbul and is sentenced to death. He was rescued from his punishment by Australian Axeman Edwars (who later became a Muslim and named Kenan). Upon his, Ali AÄŸa leaves his farm to Edwars, provided that he does not change his name. Edwars built a three-story mansion here. His is the first structure of AliaÄŸa. Beginning with his story, we will showcase local sports, games, crafts, foods, flowers and animals.

5. Problems We Had To Overcome

Our topic that we have chosen was so broad, therefore it was difficult for us to concentrate on the parts that we searched. Students worked in groups to search for information. It was not easy to find data in English, therefore they translated the information they got. The computer laboratory was generally busy, so they needed to finish their work at home.

6. Our Project Sound Bite

Collaboration makes a perfect work.

7. How did your activities and research for his CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

It helped students to collect and sort information, enhance thier understanding and integrating of language. They gained the ability to translate through the writing step. In their IT lesson, they learned how to make coding and it helped them to create webpages. And also, they worked collaboratively with teams.

PROJECT ELEMENTS

1) What information tools & technologies did you use to complete your CyberFair project?

Encyclopedias, books, newspapers, libraries, museums, digital cameras, image editors, editing articles, Google analytics

2) In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your CyberFair project both on-line and in person.

We interviewed with local people about different kinds of herbs growing in AliaÄŸa. The people that we met also cooked the traditional food and we tried them. It was really interesting that some of the food we haven’t tried before although we are living here.

3) What has been the impact of your project on your community?

The students presented the website to the other students who didn’t involve in the project and they had to chance to get to know more about their local culture. Not only the students but also the teachers and the parents visited the website and they all gave positive feedback about our project. It is just bringing past and present together.

4) How did your project involve other members of your community as helpers and volunteers?

Our IT teacher helped the students to organize and to tell about designing a website. He had a great effort.
